"But, really, why does anyone create? You feel a... a restlessness inside, a need to make something new, something no one has ever seen before. You want to add to the beauty and the richness of the world with a gift, an offering that is uniquely yours. It's an act of selfishness and generosity, all rolled into one."

What Will We Do...

... when e-book readers take over the world? It would be a shame never to tat another bookmark.

Both of these are designed by Jon Yusoff. On the left is "Two by Two" in Lizbeth Caribbean and Royal Blue, and on the right is "Chinese Coin Bookmark" in Yarnplayer's "Forest" HDT. I improvised tails for both of them, rather than try to make tassels, because I hate that.

One of these is for me, and one is for a friend. I'll let him pick which one he likes best. I suspect it will be the green one, which is a pity because that's my favorite too.

  1. Both are lovely but I am smitten with the green one as well! It is a beauty!

Maybe we have to come up with other useful thread thingys, as bookmarks may be moving into the realm of anachronisms.

Surely there could be other tatted objects that might have a use in today's world other than doilies, earrings or bookmarks.

What they are is beyond moi!

  2. Wow. Just wow. Both 'marks are very, very lovely.

Your opening question and statement have been on my mind ever since I first tried e-reading. Since childhood, bookmarks have held a cherished and intimate place in my heart. (Can you guess I was an avid reader?)

My best, though still feeble, answer is to use bookmarks in mixed media art. Say to decorate an e-reader cover? That, of course, presumes books go extinct. Hey, I said it was a feeble attempt.

Loved this post! Thanks for sharing your lovely lace and thoughts.

  3. Lovely bookmarks, while we still have books we will still need bookmarks. I suppose in years to come we will be thinking of something to tat for the ditial books. I am too old to start working out patterns for the dital books I'm sticking to real books.

  5. Your bookmarks are beautiful- I like the green one best, also. I don't think traditional books will ever become extinct- there will always be those like me who prefer the feel of old fashioned paper books. So don't give up on bookmarks yet.
