"But, really, why does anyone create? You feel a... a restlessness inside, a need to make something new, something no one has ever seen before. You want to add to the beauty and the richness of the world with a gift, an offering that is uniquely yours. It's an act of selfishness and generosity, all rolled into one."

Sweetheart Bookmark

This is the bookmark from Jon Yusoff's Sweetheart Set. I'm not much good at making tassels, so I used one of my improvised tails instead. The threads are Lizbeth colors 618 Dark Magenta and 605 Silver. I was surprised at how much I like this color combination; sometimes just seeing balls of thread randomly lying next to each other can give you ideas you never would have thought of otherwise.

  3. I do like the colors you chose, and you are so right about balls of thread lying next to each other presenting different color combinations. Maybe that's why I enjoy have threads in a jar!

  5. Your 'improvised tails' have given me inspiration on more than one occasion. They actually achieve a more cohesive overall effect than just hanging a tassel on the end of a spiral or lock stitch chain. I particularly love the one on the Chinese coin bookmark in your banner.

  6. Don't laugh, but I remember a day (a few years ago) when this pattern was too complicated and scary for me to even contemplate tatting.

Today I look at your beautiful bookmark and realize, 'I can tat that!'

Thank you for this moment of inspiration.

    1. Isdihara, this is actually a really wonderful comment, as it reminds me of my early tatting days when some patterns looked too complicated for me. I think it's good for us all to remember those times, so we can see how far we've come.

And of course, Jon has the gift of making simple patterns appear more complex than they are. In this case, it's just a matter of remembering when to switch shuttles-- and the colors help with that.
